Midstream College receives 2,800 trees

Save our Planet – Planet a Tree reached a new milestone of 10 000 trees donated to school pupils and residents of Pretoria so far this year. This coincides with Arbor Week and is the brain-child of Charl du Toit, CEO of The Success Academy, a property development and management company, who has put his money where his mouth is and has pledged to sponsor 150 000 trees over the next five years. The trees are all indigenous and are grown on Willow Feather Farm. To date there are 500 000 trees under cultivation.

At the recent tree-ceremony at Midstream College in Centurion, 2800 pupils from the primary and high schools lined up to receive their trees bringing the overall total to 10 000 of trees donated by The Success Academy.

The Save our Planet – Plant a Tree project is ongoing and Charl believes that it is not just about putting a tree in the ground. It is more about creating a continuous conversation around the caring and nurturing of the plant.  This connection with nature motivates children to be responsible for keeping it alive.  It also provides them with a better understanding of how trees affect their day-to-day lives.

Midstream College headmaster Dr. Carel Kriek says: “The staff and learners of Midstream College have had an on-going drive to promote the awareness of the beauty and value of our indigenous trees. We very proudly tagged a large number of trees on the school property last year, and we have a tree planting ceremony every year during Arbour Week. We fully support Save Our Planet – Plant a Tree initiative as an extension of our care for the environment.”

The idea behind Arbor Week is to encourage the planting of trees as a reminder of the vital role they play in sustainable development and the livelihoods of people.  Essential to this is educating the youth about their role in keeping the environment green. As a result of the Save our Planet – Planet a Tree campaign there are already thousands of young environmental ambassadors who have contributed to a healthier and safer future for all.
